WPC Sourcing: 3 Technical Terms That Impact Your Cost

A client shows you a cheaper quote. You know your product is better. But you can’t explain why.

Here are 3 terms that give you the words to win the argument.

Term 1: Virgin Material vs. Recycled Content

What’s happening:
100% recycled WPC costs 30-40% less than virgin material. New boards look and feel the same. But after 2 years? Recycled boards fade unevenly, chalk on the surface, and become brittle.

What to say to your client:

“I can find you a cheaper board. But when it fails in year two, you pay for the replacement. Ours costs more because it buys you no callbacks.”

Our standard:
Core allows ≤30% recycled content (for sustainability). But the cap layer is 100% virgin material. Non-negotiable.

Term 2: PE-based vs. PVC-based WPC

The technical reality:

  • PE-based: Softer, survives -30°C / -22°F → Outdoor decking, railings
  • PVC-based: Harder, fire-retardant → Indoor walls, ceilings

Common mistake:
Using PVC-based WPC for an outdoor project in a cold climate. One winter = cracks everywhere. Not a quality issue. Wrong material choice.

What to say to your client:

“Indoor or outdoor? Indoor, I can use PVC and save you 15%. Outdoor requires PE — it costs more, but that 15% buys you ‘no winter cracking.’”

Project type Recommended base Why
Outdoor deck (any climate) PE UV and moisture resistance
Outdoor deck (freeze-thaw area) PE PVC cracks below freezing
Indoor accent wall PVC Rigid, fire-rated, lower cost

Term 3: Single-layer vs. Dual-layer Co-extrusion

In plain English:

  • Single-layer = just a protective cap (UV + scratch resistance)
  • Dual-layer = protective cap + an added functional layer
  • 2a

What the functional layer can do:

Added function Best for
Anti-graffiti Schools, public restrooms (marker wipes off)
Anti-static Data centers, electronics manufacturing
Antimicrobial Hospitals, commercial kitchens

What to say to your client:

“Single-layer is fine for a residential balcony. But this is a kindergarten exterior wall. Without anti-graffiti coating, maintenance will be scrubbing walls every month.”

Cost note:
Dual-layer adds 10-15% to material cost. Worth it for commercial applications.

Quick Reference Card (Print for Your Sales Team)

Client says… Your one-line response
“Their price is lower.” “Ask them if their cap layer has recycled content. Ours doesn’t.”
“Their warranty is longer.” “Ask them if it covers color fading. Ours does — in writing.”
“PVC and PE are the same.” “PVC cracks below freezing. Does your winter go below freezing?”
“I just need a basic board.” “Single-layer works. But is this really a basic project?”
