I. Overview of Wood-Plastic Composites

(I) Definition and Terminology

Wood-plastic composites (WPC) are composite materials formed by filling thermoplastic plastics with plant fibers and processing them through methods such as extrusion, lamination, compression molding, or injection molding. Due to their diverse properties and application scenarios, there are various terminologies for them both domestically and internationally. Besides “wood-plastic composites,” they are also referred to as plastic-wood, eco-wood, tech-wood, recycled wood, polymer wood, etc. These different terms reflect their material composition, environmental attributes, and application characteristics from various perspectives.

(II) Significant Advantages

Compared to traditional materials, wood-plastic composites offer numerous irreplaceable advantages. In contrast to corresponding plastics, they exhibit superior tensile strength, tensile modulus, hardness, flexural properties, and creep resistance, while also possessing a more natural appearance, compensating for the monotonous look and poor texture of plastics. Compared to wood, wood-plastic composites excel in dimensional stability, water resistance, maintainability, and processing performance, effectively addressing issues such as wood’s susceptibility to moisture deformation, corrosion, and high maintenance costs. From the perspectives of environmental protection and resource utilization, wood-plastic composites offer a degree of biodegradability and recyclability, aligning with green and eco-friendly concepts. More importantly, they can extensively utilize waste plastics as well as agricultural and forestry waste such as wood flour, straw, and rice husk as raw materials for production. This not only reduces production costs but also plays a significant role in mitigating white pollution and alleviating resource shortages, achieving the recycling of resources.

(III) Main Types and Production Processes

The typical production process for wood-plastic composites is clear. First, hot stirring technology is used to thoroughly mix wood fibers and thermoplastic plastics, ensuring the uniform integration of the two main raw materials and laying a good foundation for subsequent molding. Then, depending on product requirements, different forming methods such as extrusion, lamination, compression molding, or injection molding are employed to process the mixed raw materials into the desired wood-plastic composite products. This mature production process ensures product quality stability and production efficiency, promoting the scaled development of the wood-plastic composites industry.
